they gave themselves utterly to love

Tristan and Isolde,
by Rogelio de Egusquiza (my favourite story as retold by Joseph Bedier when I was in highschool, somehow managed to get away with writing a book report on it every year, hehe).

Paolo e Francesca,
by Gaetano Previati.

The Fisherman and the Syren,
by Lord Frederic Leighton

Just a few things to share with you today! First, my beloved friend Aimee is heading to Portland for a visit and has requested suggestions for spots to visit, if you have any I'd love to hear to pass on to her!

Secondly, I've finally got around to making a mini tutorial on curling your hair with rags! I hope it's somewhat helpful, I reckon you may have some luck hunting around on youtube as well though! Please feel free to hound me with questions regarding hair in the comments of that post, I'm more than happy to oblige.

Last, a few new items in the shop today! Don't forget to let me know if you purchase something and read this blog as I'd like to send a little drawing just for you! I could use the extra kick in the arse to start drawing again and will happily take requests at your order (portraits of you, dogs, babes, Eric Northman, whatever you please)! While I can't guarantee that that they will be great I can say that it will be a tiny amusement for both you and me!

  2. Oh yes, you absolutely should! I edited to specify that the version I read was the one retold by french medievalist Joseph Bedier, it's so poetic and perfect and not at all like the rotten film they put out a few years ago (completely left out the best part and drove me CRAZY, though Iseult was exactly as I had envisioned her to be). Happy reading, friend!

  3. My favourite painting of Tristan and Iseult is by John Duncan (you can google it with his name and Tristan and Isolde.)

Also, have you heard of Gustave Moreau? He is one of my favourite painters, when I went to Paris I went to his museum - he decided he didn't want anyone organising his work after he died so he converted his own house into a museum to himself while he was still alive. His Head of Orpheus with a Thracian Maid is in the d'Orsay and is lovely, although the copies on Google don't really do it justice. ANYWAY you might like some of his work which is why I mentioned him.

(also I can't afford to buy anything at the moment, but when I can I think you need to draw a picture of Pam kthx.)

  4. Poppy, oh I like that one because it has the most important part in it WHEN THEY DRINK THE LOVE POTION, which if I recall correctly, the film and a few tellings of the story do not include? It's a lovely painting.

I am familiar with Gustave Moreau but not the story his curatorial efforts! I like that! If I was better organized and had more self control I would work harder to paint in his stylings. I'm afraid I'm now lacking terribly in skills to do so. Drawing PAM, however, is a different story all together as I reckon most of my drawings already look a fair amount like her (those lips!) I love Pam. More lesbian weirdness Pam!

  5. Dude, I just shared a google doc with you that I am working on, full of Portland recommendations! It's only food and some nature stuff so far, it's taking me forever to compile because there are so many good things. Pass it along to Aimee!

  6. Tragic love stories! I want to read Tristan and Isolde again. P.S. Thanks for the sweet tutorial on the rag curls. I'll have to try it out sometime this week (I'm worried because I have very straight hair).

  11. As a Portland native I am suggesting Mississippi St in North Portland. Among other things there are great antique stores, a vintage light-bulb emporium and a very funny bar at one end called Proust. As well as a fantastic taco shop at the other end called Por Que No? And though it may be a little tricky to find the Skidmore Bluffs/Overlook Park at the very end of N Skidmore (the street perpendicular to Proust) is not to be missed for summertime evenings. Last time I was there a impromptu jam session with an upright bass played.

  13. Thank you for the lovely comment! I have to agree, the carrot hat is what really caught my eye. You can't deny an orange hat. I've always been such an admirer of your blog so I'm flattered to know that you've taken a liking to mine! It's nice to know a fellow hat lover.

  14. Washington Park is a great place to go to get a nice view of the city—don't miss the big rose garden there, either! You can take the streetcar around the Pearl (Powell's City of Books is a MUST) and to NW 23rd where you can walk and window shop the cute boutiques. Those are some of my favorite places!

  16. Hey Hannah!
I've been eyeing the sailboat peach stripey tank at your shop for a while.
But I'm such a loser, I've never used paypal.

And of course I should also mention how much I enjoyed this post.
Where I live, the serene paintings in thrift stores are less picked apart then the clothing racks.

  22. Faux Naif, such a lovely comment to receive! My brains thank you!

Kathy, definitely take a gander at clevernettle.com as Anja is chock full of helpful Portland hints!

Melissa, it's quite simple once you get the hang of it (really, once you sign up, haha). Let me know if I can help you though if you'd like to make the shirt yours!

Gabriela, my mum studied art history when i was wee and we had lots of art textbooks around as a result! i used to spend whole afternoons going through them and reading about the tumultuous love lives of the artists. we always had lots of art around in our house and my parents made an effort to bring me to gallerys and museums a plenty, and i guess it just stuck with me! (how could it not though, glorious as it is!)

  25. Lovely art post, Hannah. I always liked Tristan and Isolde, though it's been so long since I read it that all I can remember is that it's about love... ; )

When I was in high school, I got away with a book report on Sherlock Holmes ever year!

  29. Portland places to eat: Montage, Voodoo Doughnuts, McMenamin's and all the Thai places are excellent. Lots of vegan restaurants and cafes everywhere.

Cool places to visit: Powell's Bookstore, Washington Park/Rose Garden/Zoo, Chinatown

Lots of good shopping in Northwest Portland and Southeast Portland on Hawthorne and Belmont, for thrifting and vintage particularly.
