you suit me well

(all photos thanks to this wonderful set on flickr!)

Landon and I are set to embark on our first tropical vacation in a week from today and I find that I am rather unprepared for our beachy destination (particularly in the swimwear department)! I have a few sweet vintage suits but they are too serious and dark for this particular outing and so I turn to you, internet buddies, where do you find your party-time swim attire? (Our destination is that glorious island of Jurassic Park.) Ideally one of those suits pictured above (especially the bear suit with the big bow and matching hat) would miraculously appear in my luggage (my fingers are not crossed). Any hints as to where I can find a suit in the city or some super online shop? Many thanks in advance! (and then there is the issue of summer footwear... ru-roh)

  1. If you have money and time, go online. Mod cloth has some cute bathing suits. Otherwise I would go to Target, theyre cute and cheap

  3. I think all those vintage swim suits are adorable. But I agree that's they're more difficult to wear, and more difficult to find in the first place. It takes a great hunter to find a good vintage swim suit.

I got my swimsuit online at Newport News:

They have some cute ones if you dig for them at pretty darn good prices.
But if you'd just like some bright colors and barely make a dent in the ol' bank account, Wal-Mart has cheap and colorful suits. It's not the most glamorous option (and they probably won't hold up forever), but sometimes it can be fun and pretty practical.

  5. funny, i just finished suit shopping 5 minutes ago.

    ...and bought five...

i looked on www.modcloth.com and urbanoutfitters but found the almost-identical suits for much less (and affordable) on ebay and etsy. when i love something i go wild with it, so now i'm the proud owner of 5 maillot-inspired suits!

watch out summer (er, and debter's prison)...HERE I COME!

  6. Yay! I knew you'd like Desperate Romantics. I just wish there was more!

    This bikini is lovely:

Although it seems you can't buy it in the blue anymore :(

I also love vintage bathing suits, but I would imagine they'd be nearly impossible to find. Next summer I think I might have a go at making some.

  13. P.s Try What Katie did for Repro vintage swimsuits-

They use Esther williams patterns for all their shapes but make them out of fabrics that are much more wearable than vintage swimsuits. The red one is on my wish list! :) x

  18. That bedazzled bear suit is. The. BEST. THING. I HAVE. EVER. EVER. SEEN.

Anything I would suggest would be woefully inadequate. But maybe search eBay/Etsy for Catalina? They're my favorite vintage swimsuit makers, although your options past the 1950s tend to get a bit too floral/flouncy for my taste!

  24. I have a swimsuit I really like that I ordered from pinupgirlclothing.com. It's a black and red cherry print skirted one-piece. But I don't know how much time you have to wait for an order to come in, so that might not be so practical.

And I adore that fourth photo! That poor girl on the far left seems a little awkward though, like the geeky outcast in a group of popular girls. She's a beautiful girl though!

  26. Thanks for all the advice, friends! Unfortunately I'm a bit more strapped for time then I thought! Perhaps Hawaii will have some hidden deadstock treasure for me?

  27. I agree with the third picture; bears are the best swimsuit accessory.

I know ModCloth has some vintage-esque suits. I'm not sure, other than that. I have not updated my swim wardrobe in many moons. More importantly, have the best time EVER!
