Sylvie

If I had access to a magic time travelling phonebooth that would allow me to exchange wardrobes, hairstyles, make-up and teeth with a person of my choice I would... not be able to pick just one person! But on that great big list of figures past (who, in this case, are figures present too) Sylvie Vartan would be very near the top!

I nabbed all of these from a wonderful Sylvie Vartan themed tumblr, here. Read about Sylvie here and listen to Sylvie here!

See more of my style inspirations here.

So badly I need this catsuit.

Inspired by: Patterns

Very inspired by these vintage pattern illustrations. The hair, the cuts, the styling, the patterns, THE SHOES. This is pretty much exactly how I envision my personal FW12 fashions. Dreamy.

hair brained

let me braid your hair
For those of you who have expressed interest in learning more about my snooki brain hair I've made a tiny tutorial on the subject here! (I backdated the post because I was embarrassed to have it pop up on the main page lest some stranger stroll along and witness my sorry tutorial skills.)

Still in the midst of blog re-model and apologize if your screen is being harassed by my ginormous everything! In the meantime check out the new (and growing) links page! Am very pleased at finally sitting down and paying some much needed attention to this old blog.

Back soon pals! Here's a mix I made last August 31st.

La Bohème

Lillian Gish was an actress most popular in the 1910s and 20s (though her career continued up until the late 1980s when she starred in the Whales of August the trailer for which ran after the "little hershey's kisses" ad on The Princess Bride VHS). I was reminded of Miss Gish when I found an old disc of pictures that my brother had put together for me featuring a bunch of hilarious webcam pictures, drawings and videos from my high-school years (more on that another time) and I came across a drawing I had made of her. I remember falling absolutely head-over-heals for her adorable little face when I was researching silent films for a silent movie project I was working on in drama class (I wish I could find that video for you as it is mind blowingly silly and now far away enough from my present self that I'm no longer embarrassed by it but instead delighted). Her hair is pretty much my dream hair right now and fortunately, given my frizzy head of hair, quite achievable (must try that gorgeous up-do)!

Read more about Lillian here, here, and here.

I've never been in style, so I can never go out of style. - Lillian Gish

I've been slacking on the mixes, sorry! September was a crazy busy month but things have settled down for a bit and I'm spending this rainy night indoors with Landon, paint brushes and movies. Here is a mix I made a few weeks ago but have yet to post!

Man, you guys, I'm no good at writing these days, sorry (unless it's business emails, I'm brilliant at business emails. Maybe I will just start writing super formal business posts).

Summer hairstyle inspirations! Click the photos for their original sources - thank you kind people of flickr for the endless amounts of inspiration you've shared. I made a little gallery featuring more summer hair-dos to inspire. I've also been keeping a tumblr (late on this bandwagon) account to fill with various photographic inspirations here.

I answered a few questions that were asked in my last post here. Thank you for all your kind comments! Also like to thank the lovely ladies over at BALLAD OF for their kind comments and featuring this blog amongst such a great lot of inspiration. Check out their magazine and contribute to their next issue!

One last thing before I get back to working on getting future Ebay store sorted (will keep you abreast of any news regarding the shop). A few months ago (thanksgiving day to be exact) Landon, Rebecca and I were at Whole Foods in Union Square and a beautiful girl in a brown dress approached us and confessed to reading this blog. Are you still reading this blog beautiful brown dress girl? Cos if you are I'd like to be your friend. Landon was harassing me to approach you for a number (I feel like such a creep as lately Landon has been trying to set me up on dates and nudging me towards young ladies at our local watering hole) but I was too shy. So, if you happen to read this rather belated missed connection leave me a comment and let's have a date!

after an unsuccessful at home dye-job (somehow managed to get my roots lighter and rest of hair darker and murdered scalp while at it) i've decided it may be time to return to my natural copper coloured locks in order to save dollars and the hassle of covering up light bald looking roots every few weeks. of course, no hair related decision can be made before consulting the internet! so friends, i ask you, what do you think? a blonde, a brunette or a redhead?

thank you for all your advice regarding digital cameras! hopefully will be able to scrape up enough dollar bills to nab one of my own in the coming months!

on backcombing your hair

Over the (many) years of blogging I've had numerous questions regarding my big brain hair styling so I decided to make a long overdue mini-tutorial on the bouffant. I recommend typing bouffant or beehive into youtube to find a plethora of (those better versed in the art of tutorial making) videos on the subject but hopefully this is somewhat helpful!

1. Grab a chunk of hair from the crown of your head. It can be a ginormous to the bang chunk or a modest bumpit sized chunk as pictured.

2. Maybe you have one of those handy skinny backcombing brushes? I do but I was too lazy to fish it out. Any fine bristle brush should do the job nicely. Grab that brush and backcomb, backcomb, backcomb that chunk of hair. Start at the middle of your hair and "peel" back.

3. Now you look like metal cousin It. Congratulations, you're doing well.

4. Push it back, touch it cos it feels like grandma hair (or my hair for the last ten years).

5. Now pat it down because you don't want to look like a Peggy Bundy halloween costume. Hopefully your bouffant is more even than mine pictured here.

6. If you're having trouble maintaining volume try pinning your hair up with a bobby pin. Kinda like a bumpit, I think? I've never tried one but probably similar.

& here is a quick tutorial on a really tame looking Edwardian do.

1. Backcomb EVERYTHING. LIKE CRAZY.

2. Brush the top layer of hair so it's smooth and twist your hair into a little bun and secure with pins.

3. Now you are Megan Follows in Anne of Green Gables. Kinda.

And last but not least, the half bouffant!

1. You know, backcomb it.

2. Then pin it.

So there you have it! An excellent example of why I don't often do tutorials. :-/

The best way to do your hair is to just get your hands in it! All the hairstyles I know I learned by just fooling around until it worked. When I was nine I surprised my mum by coming downstairs with a perfect 90s french twist (I was going as Madonna to my friends rockstar themed party and left the house with water balloons stuffed in my bodysuit, super cool.) and then heidi braids and french braids and fishtail braids. I spent a lot of time playing with my arse long hair when I wee.

Just for fun, post your pictures here of your hair mid backcomb! Let's start a community of creepy cousin It photos!
